'HyperCLOVA X learns Korean language 6,500 times more than ChatGPT'

Naver will introduce HyperCLOVA X, its hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) model that has learned 6,500 times more Korean than American AI company OpenAI's ChatGPT, in order to compete with prominent global AI services, according to CEO of Naver Cloud, Monday.
"Team Naver is ready to join the changing global trends with its global-level AI technology and capabilities," Kim Yoo-won, co-CEO of Naver's cloud service arm Naver Cloud, said during the Naver DEVIEW developers' conference in Seoul.
Kim said the service, which will be introduced in July, is an upgrade of its hyperscale AI model HyperCLOVA, which was unveiled in May 2021.
"HyperCLOVA X is a hyperscale AI that has been upgraded so that users can combine their own data with HyperCLOVA to provide immediate responses that meet customers' needs. From individual services to specific companies or countries, we expect to create new business opportunities," Kim said.
With the service, Naver aims to commercialize a hyperscale AI service like ChatGPT, a generative AI service that anyone can use and will create a competitive domestic AI ecosystem.
Naver said HyperCLOVA X has strengths in the Korean language compared to ChatGPT. Though attention is growing to ChatGPT-like AI services worldwide, there are still difficulties in commercializing localized AI services due to the reliability of data and cost issues, which is why Naver thinks it can become the best AI service provider for Korean users.
"HyperCLOVA X is an AI that has been improved to learn the Korean language 6,500 times more than ChatGPT. Even a small amount of data can be combined with data held by users to build hyperscale AI products optimized for specific services or companies," said Nako Sung, an executive officer in charge of HyperCLOVA X.
Kim Yong-bum, chief scientist of Naver Search US, also introduced SearchGPT, the internet company's next-generation search engine technology.
The SearchGPT project uses OCEAN, a HyperCLOVA-based large language model, as its backbone. Based on this, the service will guide the optimal path for users' search results and generate answers that better understand users' intentions.
"We are working on the project focusing on three things ― trustworthiness of information, connectedness to Naver services and multimodal for effective information provision," the chief scientist said. "We will generate accurate and reliable information through cross-repeat verification and user feedback, and provide intuitive information optimized for users' search intentions."
