Samsung Electronics said on Monday that it has been increasing the use of recycled materials and components for its new gadgets, such as the Galaxy S23 smartphone, as part of efforts to tackle climate change.
Samsung said for the S23 series, which will hit the global market on Feb. 17, it used abandoned fishing nets for the casing of the S Pen stylus, water bottles for volume keys, plastic bottles for external cases, recycled aluminum for SIM card tray and glasses for display glass.
"Samsung continues to make efforts to minimize the impact of the global environment while maintaining product quality," said Park Sung-sun, executive vice president and head of the Mechanical R&D Team of MX Business at Samsung.
"The Galaxy S23 series is a product that focuses on eco-friendly technologies and innovations of Samsung."
Park added using recycled materials for its products would increase production costs but the company has been focusing on its social responsibility and working on innovating its technologies.

Samsung also used recycled paper to make boxes for the Galaxy S23 series. The plastic films attached to the front and back of the products have also been replaced with recycled paper.
The company also minimized the size of packaging and reduced product weight to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases generated in the transportation process.
Samsung has been reducing the use of disposable plastics in packaging of its flagship Galaxy smartphones since 2017 and has set a goal of completely removing disposable plastics from packaging of all Galaxy products by 2025.
To let its users use their smartphones longer, the company provides four operating system upgrades and security updates over five years after the release of the Galaxy S23. The company expects this policy will give consumers the best experience for a longer period of time.
