A trip to Ireland finds Catholics and Protestants eager for peace if politicians permit it
A trip to Ireland finds Catholics and Protestants eager for peace if politicians permit it
To take a break from writing about the horrors in Ukraine, I went on a traditional music and culture tour of Ireland, led by the noted Irish musician, and former Philly resident, Mick Maloney.

Boris Johnson survives - for now
Boris Johnson survived a Conservative Party no-confidence vote. Still, the bruising he took from his fellow Tories and his falling fortunes among British voters do not inspire confidence that the United Kingdom's prime minister is out of political trouble.

School shootings endanger our children, teachers and democracy
I remember the days when the only thing students worried about in school was getting good grades, and when there was a healthy supply of candidates wanting to become teachers.

Current state of COVID-19 should invite hope - not complacency
The famous Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken” begins: “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, / And sorry I could not travel both.” The United States and the rest of the world faced a fork in the road with two possible options at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic: attempt to control the spread of the virus through social measures and lockdowns or let the virus run its cou...

US gun violence spreads across border
“The youth will remember this as a time of war. Their DNA is tattooed with bullets and guns and blood, and this is a form of killing tomorrow. We are murderers of our own future,” Mexican reporter and editor Javier Valdez Cardenas said in 2011, as he received a press freedom award from the Committee to Project Journalists.

Freedom to love my trans kid as he is
Last month, my son Alex graduated from Bennington College. I am incredibly proud of the young man he has become. He is much stronger than I was at his age. He knows exactly who he is. He is a poet and a scholar, who happens to be trans and gay. If it were not for gender-affirming care, I don't think he would be here today.

Can we save the planet with food?
World Environment Day (June 5), led by the United Nations Environment Programme, serves as a reminder: Our Earth is a living organism, and every one of us is a part of its body. But that body is burning up with fever.

America with less gun violence is still possible and worth fighting for
The mass slaying of 19 schoolchildren and two teachers evokes a pain that is almost too hard to express. Compounding this pain is anger - anger at knowing that the deaths of these children, the families in Buffalo, New York, the churchgoers in California and the shootings that happen seemingly every day in Chicago are preventable.
