To the least of these
"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” - Matthew 25:50, The King James Bible. To endeavor for justice, (for the infirmed, the weak, the young, the poor, and the socially undesirable) is really at the heart of most of the world's religions. Yet, Korea has a poor record when it comes to aiding those most in need.

Freedom in Itaewon
“Ghetto” is a word packed with meaning. It started in Europe: places where Jews were segregated from the Christian populations. Later, during World War II, it had a much more ominous meaning. These ghettos were not only where Jews were relegated, but they became the processing grounds for Jewish internment in concentration camps. In these ghettos, poverty, disease, cursory executions and crime were rampant.

Violence against women
Kim Hyun-joong, a K-pop star of screen and music, has recently become embroiled in a scandal of his own making. He hit his girlfriend. NFL star Ray Rice was terminated because of surveillance footage showing him brutally punching his then-fiancee unconscious, then dragging her limp body out of the elevator in which the incident took place.

The knight's not right (2)
In my last column, I argued against American interventionist policies. Historical evidence supports my main assertion: American foreign policy, along with its European counterparts, isn't good for America or the world, often creating conditions for dictatorships, radicalism, poverty and a host of other social ills attendant with imperialism. Playing peacekeeper of the Earth has also meant high opportunity costs to American society, and has seriously, negatively affected the quality of life for many Americans. Some Western Europeans, and citizens of the British Commonwealth, scoff at the back...

The knight's not right
Neo-liberals and neo-conservatives haven't learned this simple lesson: imperialism is a gateway sin, as it requires so many other sins to successfully execute it. The world has always been on fire. The human heart knows no end to violence, cruelty and malice. However, according to some pundits, the world's a mess, and it's President Obama's fault. Obama isn't nearly as comfortable with deploying American military power as his predecessor, George W. Bush. Yet, he finds himself being dragged back into Iraq.

'Do you wanna be white?'
As recently reported in "The Korea Times" there's a Korean cosmetics advertisement positing this very question - in America. In 2014, no less, if you can believe it.

Wack friends
First, for the uninitiated, "wack" is an American urban expression meaning "uncool." Admittedly, there are hints of misanthropy in my personality. Some of that misanthropy is well-informed by legitimate concerns and unfortunate experiences; some of it's informed by nonsense.

Killing families
Korea, Japan, and America have conservative or conservative-leaning governments supposedly concerned with "the family." Korea and Japan keenly feel this, as their respective populations are in a precipitous decline. They aren't producing enough children to replace the old and dying. Both nations have negative population growth. (America’s population is just above replacement level due to immigration and the births thereof. Native American, African-American and white childbirths have been declining for decades).

Are Christians crazy?
It sounds trite, so forgive me: some of my best friends are Christian. I'm a Christian (Presbyterian), though I think one could call me a liberal, even lapsed, Christian, like lapsed Catholics or Jews.

My beef with vegetarians
I've encountered Westerners and native Koreans who are vegetarians or vegans. Most are pleasant enough, but some are exceedingly pushy with their beliefs. Not so subtly, they believe in the supposed moral superiority of not eating flesh. The loudest and most subjective argument you'll hear PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and their counterparts assert is any use of animals - for food, clothing and/or medical research - is morally wrong.
