Korea's defense question and Bandow's piece

Way back in May of 2013, geopolitical analyst Doug Bandow wrote an incendiary, yet not widely read, column for the conservative think tank the Cato Institute about South Korea's defense posture and its dependence on the United States for military preparedness. The title, and you won't believe it: “South Korea: Close Friend of the U.S., and a Defense Welfare Queen.” The subtitle: “Even if Seoul is improbably believed to be an essential ally, it does not require U.S. defense subsidies.”

Underestimated: Biden and Democrats

Old dogs can learn new tricks, or maybe for this particular old dog, he already had new tricks. For all the second-guessing of President Biden by both allies and enemies, he has accomplished more transformative legislation in his first term since at least President Johnson, who ushered in the Civil and Voting Rights Acts, Fair Housing Act, Medicaid, Medicare, and a bevy of other anti-poverty measures.

In America, the midterm elections are nearly upon us. Republicans (also known as the GOP) stand to take the House at least. Historically, the party of the president (President Biden's Democratic Party) loses seats in midterms.

There is no bottom

Democracy has fallen

The American midterm elections this year will be the most consequential ones since at least I was born. If Republicans win back the House of Representatives and or the Senate, a white, Christo-fascist, illiberal party with a death cult of personality for Trump or Trumpism will be in power. President Biden could be impeached for no reason, show trials of Cabinet officials will occur, horrific policies like a universal abortion ban, and even worse, will happen.

'The Handmaid's Tale'

Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel, "The Handmaid's Tale," explores a near-future America (renamed after the biblical nation-state, Gilead) where women are sexually enslaved to be breeding machines (handmaids) for military and political elites. In this Christo-fascist regime, sexual minorities, adherents of other religions and political dissidents are sent to toxic labor/concentration camps, tortured, maimed, and/or summarily executed. Women, even of the ruling military theocracy, don't have much autonomy or personal agency, if at all

Conservatives across advanced democracies share a similar ideology. They believe in “less government,” smaller social safety nets, neoliberal economic policies, and are hostile to workers' rights while fetishizing concentrated wealth and free markets. But no conservative political party in any democratic country is as radical and unhinged as the American Republicans (henceforth called the GOP, or “Grand Old Party”).
