The 25-year-old set a record in the 200-meter medley race at the Asian Games held last year in Jakarta and Palembang. During the National Sports Festival in October, Kim swept five gold medals and set a Korean record in the 800-meter freestyle relay. At the FINA Swimming World Cup earlier this month, she won a silver medal in the 200-meter medley.
"Female athletes' contributions are immense in making Korean sports what they are now. It's the government's role to nurture female athletes and to support them in all possible ways," Minister Park Yang-woo said in a statement.
The award also recognized Kim Il-soon, former national tennis team coach who also taught men's rising tennis star Chung Hyeon, and Lee Hae-in, a figure skater who won a gold medal recently at the ISU Figure Skating Junior Grand Prix.
