World Taekwondo won the Best International Sports Federation Award from the International University Sports Federation, also known as FISU in Turin, Italy, Friday. FISU also gave Iran's taekwondo star Armin Hadipour the best male athlete award.
FISU said World Taekwondo's contribution to the development of the university sports movement was worthy of recognition.
Since 2017, taekwondo has been an official Summer Universiade sport. FISU also noted the work of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation which has been teaching taekwondo to refugees and displaced children in Jordan, Turkey and Nepal since 2016.
World Taekwondo President Choue Chung-won said, "It is a great honor to receive this prestigious award. I would like to acknowledge the excellent work that FISU has done over the years, especially on our shared goals of gender equality, innovation and equal opportunities for all. We are truly grateful to have FISU as our reliable partner in making the world a better place through sport. This award is a fantastic achievement for World Taekwondo, but it is only the beginning."
At the FISU General Assembly on Friday, World Taekwondo and FISU signed an MOU to create the Sport Peace Corps, through which they will come up with sports activities and programs for those who do not have access to sports.
"Through our MOU, which we signed earlier today, we look forward to closer and more meaningful collaboration with FISU on future projects," Choue said.
