Hyundai Motor Group said Friday it will invest 8.1 trillion won (US$7.4 billion) in the United States by 2025 to produce electric vehicles, improve production facilities and increase its presence in the smart mobility solutions area.
현대차그룹이 전기차 현지 생산, 생산설비 확충, 스마트 모빌리티 솔루션 분야 영향력 확대를 위해 2025년까지 미국에 8조1000억원을 투자한다고 금요일 밝혔다.
Hyundai Motor Co., the flagship of the country's top automaking group, plans to produce EVs in its Alabama plant starting next year and its affiliate Kia Corp. also has a plan to roll out EVs in its Georgia plant, Hyundai Motor America said in a statement.
국내 최대의 자동차 제조 그룹 현대차그룹의 현대차는 내년부터 미국 앨라배마 공장에서 전기차를 생산할 계획이며, 계열사인 기아도 조지아 공장에서 전기차를 생산할 계획이라고 현대차 미국법인이 발표했다.
Hyundai and Kia will finalize their plan to upgrade their U.S. plants and expand their local EV production depending on the market conditions and U.S. government EV policy, it said.
현대차와 기아는 시장 상황과 미국 정부의 전기차 정책에 따라 미국 공장의 설비확충과 현지 생산 확대 계획을 마무리할 것이라고 말했다.
"Hyundai will lead the future of mobility in the United States and around the world. Our efforts are proof positive that Hyundai will continue to pursue excellence in our current and future product lineup," Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, said in a statement.
호세 무뇨스 현대차 북미법인 사장은 성명을 통해 "현대차는 미국과 전 세계에서 모빌리티의 미래를 이끌 것이며 이러한 노력은 현대차가 현재와 미래의 제품군에서 계속해서 우수성을 추구할 것이라는 확실한 증거"라고 말했다.
Kia North America President Sean Yoon said, "One key element of Kia's transformation is transitioning from the internal combustion engine to electrification."
숀 윤 기아 미국법인 대표이사는 "기아가 내연기관에서 전기로 전환하는 것이 핵심"이라고 말했다."
The auto giant didn't provide the investment breakdown.
기아는 투자금액의 세부내역을 공개하지 않았다.
Hyundai announced its investment plans ahead of President Moon Jae-in's meeting with U.S President Joe Biden in Washington next week.
현대차는 다음 주 워싱턴에서 열리는 문재인 대통령과 조 바이든 미국 대통령과의 정상회담을 앞두고 투자 계획을 발표했다.
The South Korean automotive group expects the investment to enhance its competitiveness by prioritizing future mobility technologies, including electrification and hydrogen energy.
현대기아차그룹은 이번 투자를 통해 전기와 수소에너지 등 미래 모빌리티 기술을 우선시함으로써 경쟁력을 높일 것으로 기대하고 있다.
The automaking group also said it will work with the U.S. government and business partners to expand the U.S. hydrogen energy ecosystem and offer its NEXO hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
현대차그룹은 또 미국 정부 및 협력사와 협력해 미국의 수소 에너지 생태계를 확대하고 넥쏘 수소연료전기차도 출시할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
The group said it will also invest in robotics and autonomous driving technologies to strengthen its presence in the world's most important automobile market. (Yonhap)
