Hyundai Motor and Kia, the country's two largest automakers under Hyundai Motor Group, enjoyed triple-digit gains in net profit in the first quarter. Korea Times file
Hyundai Motor and Kia, the country's two largest automakers under Hyundai Motor Group, enjoyed triple-digit gains in net profit in the first quarter. Korea Times file

The second quarter earnings of Hyundai Motor and Kia are expected to serve as a "barometer" for the future of the domestic auto market which is reeling from the effects of the global chip shortage, industry sources said Wednesday.

The country's two major automakers under Hyundai Motor Group achieved earnings surprises in the first quarter despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing shortage of automotive semiconductors.

During the January-March period, Hyundai Motor saw its net profit surge 175.4 percent year-on-year to 1.52 trillion won ($1.3 billion), while Kia's net profit jumped 289.2 percent to 1.04 trillion won.

"Such triple-digit gains may not be the case in the second quarter," a source said, noting that a healthy chip inventory was one of the reasons behind the strong performances.

The source pointed out that the two firms have been intermittently suspending assembly lines at domestic plants in the second quarter, due to the lack of automotive chips.

A different source speculated that the two automakers' respective inventories may run out by May in the worst case scenario, meaning they may join three minor carmakers, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and SsangYong, that suffered decreased sales in the first quarter.

The three collectively sold 43,109 vehicles here from January through March, a 23.8 percent year-on-year drop from 2020 and the worst performance since 1998 when the country was hit by the Asian financial crisis.

"And one can imagine how fatal it can be for the domestic automobile market if Hyundai and Kia perform poorly in the second quarter," a third source said.

A researcher at the Institute for International Trade, a think tank run by the Korea International Trade Association, said the domestic industry could overcome gloomy expectations from the global automotive chip shortage if Hyundai and Kia continue to excel in their second 2021 quarterly earnings.

The reverse situation, according to him, means "the start of hardship for the Korean car market."

An analyst was skeptical about sales prospects, saying, "The struggle with the chip shortage is becoming a global phenomenon and Hyundai Motor and Kia may not be able to remain unscathed this time."
