[NATIONAL] Mpox cases spread across the nation

Cases of mpox, also known as monkeypox, are showing signs of spreading across the nation. New infections have been reported in Seoul and neighboring areas, and also in cities and provinces around the country.
원숭이두창으로도 알려진 엠폭스 확진 환자가 전국적으로 확산될 조짐을 보이고 있다. 서울과 인근 지역, 그리고 전국 시도에서도 새로운 감염 사례가 보고됐다.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) is working to enhance mpox vaccination publicity and to designate hospitals for mpox patients across the country, in response to a recent increase in locally transmitted infections.
질병관리청은 최근 국내 감염자가 증가함에 따라 전국적으로 엠폭스 예방접종 홍보를 강화하고 엠폭스 환자를 위한 전담 병원 지정을 위해 힘쓰고 있다.

The KDCA confirmed two more cases of mpox, Wednesday, bringing the country's total to 18.
질병관리청은 수요일 2명의 엠폭스 환자가 또 늘어난 것을 확인했으며 전국적으로는 18명의 확진 환자가 발생했다.

Among the total, 13 cases were reported this month alone and are believed to be locally acquired, as the new patients had not recently traveled abroad.
확진 환자 18명 중에서 이달에만 13명의 환자가 보고됐는데, 신규 환자들이 최근 해외여행을 다녀온 적이 없어 국내에서 감염된 것으로 보인다.

The country's first five cases, reported last June through to March, were linked to overseas travel.
지난 6월부터 3월까지 보고된 첫 5명의 확진 사례는 해외 여행과 관련이 있었다.

Among the 13 new patients, five live in Seoul, three in nearby Gyeonggi Province, two in South Gyeongsang Province, one in North Gyeongsang Province, one in Daegu and one in South Jeolla Province. Twelve are Korean nationals, while one is a foreign national.
신규 환자 13명 중에서 서울에 5명, 인근 경기도에 3명, 경남에 2명, 경북에 1명, 대구에 1명, 전남에 1명이 거주하고 있다. 12명은 한국인이고, 1명은 외국인이다.

According to the KDCA, most of the new patients have been linked to transmission via close contact, including sexual contact, with persons who may have already contracted the mpox virus. The meetings happened in locations such as nightclubs or via mobile applications.
질병관리청에 따르면 대부분의 신규 환자들은 이미 엠폭스 바이러스에 감염되었을 가능성이 있는 사람들과 성적 접촉을 포함한 밀접 접촉을 통한 감염과 연관되어 있다. 이러한 접촉은 나이트클럽이나 모바일 앱과 같은 장소를 통해 일어났다.

KDCA official Lim Sook-young said cases not counted in official statistics will likely exist in local communities, noting that the disease spreads largely through intimate contact, which people may not openly talk about.
질병관리청 임숙영 관계자는 공식 통계에 집계되지 않은 사례들이 지역 사회에 존재할 가능성이 높다면서 사람들이 공개적으로 이야기하지 않을 수 있는 밀접 접촉(성접촉)을 통해 주로 엠폭스가 확산된다고 전했다.

"Volunteer reporting is very important," the official said.
이 관계자는 "자발적인 보고가 매우 중요하다"고 말했다.

According to the World Health Organization report, 96.4 percent of cases with available data were men, with a median age of 34 years, as of Feb. 24 this year. Among cases with sexual orientation reported, 85.5 percent have identified as gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men.
세계보건기구 보고서에 따르면, 올해 2월 24일 현재, 성별이 확인된 엠폭스 확진자 중 96.4%가 남성이었고, 평균 나이는 34세였다. 성적 성향이 보고된 사례 중 85.5%가 게이, 양성애자, 그리고 여러 명의 성 파트너가 있는 남성 간 성관계로 확인됐다.

The KDCA said that it is actively encouraging those who have come into contact with mpox patients to get vaccinated and that it is working to designate at least five sickbeds to treat mpox patients in each city and province across the country.
질병관리청은 엠폭스 환자와 접촉한 사람들에게 예방접종을 적극 권장하고 있으며, 전국 각 시도에서 최소 5개 병상을 지정해 엠폭스 환자를 치료하도록 힘쓰고 있다고 밝혔다.

The KDCA said it is distributing information on the characteristics of mpox and preventive measures to people at high risk of infection.
질병관리청은 감염 위험도가 높은 사람들에게 엠폭스의 주요 증상과 예방 수칙에 관한 정보를 배포하고 있다고 밝혔다.

Health authorities noted, however, that the risk of transmission of mpox in the general population is relatively low, considering that the disease does not spread through contact in daily life like COVID-19 and other respiratory infectious diseases.
보건당국은 그러나 코로나19나 호흡기 감염병처럼 일상생활에서의 접촉을 통해 전파되지 않는 점을 감안하면 일반인의 엠폭스 감염 위험은 상대적으로 낮다고 전했다.
