When Olympic hero Sohn Kee-chung carried the flame into the Olympic stadium in Seoul in 1988, South Korea came of age: The Games showcased the country's astonishing growth and also accelerated its democratization.
1988년 올림픽 영웅 손기정이 서울 올림픽 경기장으로 성화를 봉송했을 때 한국은 크게 성장했다. 올림픽 경기는 한국의 놀라운 성장을 보여주었고 민주화를 가속화했다.
Now South Korea is coming of age in a different way: old age.
지금 한국이 하고 있는 다른 의미의 성장은 바로 ‘고령화'다.
South Korea is one of a cluster of countries that the McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) calls "superaged societies." By the 2030s, MHI expects South Korea to have the highest life expectancy in the world. Already, it was 83.5 in 2023, up from 71 in 1988, and just 55 in 1960.
한국은 맥킨지 건강연구소가 "초고령 사회"라고 부르는 국가 중 하나다. 맥킨지는 2030년대까지 한국이 세계에서 가장 긴 기대 수명을 가진 국가가 될 것이라고 내다봤다. 한국의 기대 수명은 1960년에 55세, 1988년에 71세였다가 2023년에 이미 83.5세가 되었다.
This is, of course, great news. Turning to the flip side of the demographic chart, though, South Korea also has the world's lowest birthrate ― just 0.81 in 2022. That combination means that South Korea is the fastest-aging country in the OECD.
이는 물론 좋은 소식이다. 하지만 인구 통계학적인 관점에서 이러한 현상의 이면은 한국이 2022년에 0.81명의 가장 낮은 출산율을 기록한 국가라는 점이다. 초고령화와 낮은 출산율의 결합은 한국이 OECD 국가 중에서 가장 빠르게 고령화를 겪는 국가임을 의미한다.
This fact brings up a question: How can South Korea make aging healthier? Having successfully added years to life, how can it, as MHI puts it, add "life to years?"
이러한 사실은 다음과 같은 의문을 불러일으킨다. 한국이 더 건강하게 나이들 준비가 되어 있나? 기대 수명 연장에 성공한 한국은 맥킨지가 말하듯 "더 늘어난 세월에 활력을" 더할 수 있나?
Here are five ways to extend healthy life for South Koreans, while containing medical costs.
아래는 한국인이 의료비용을 제한하면서 건강한 삶을 연장할 수 있는 다섯 가지 방법이다.
Invest in the promotion of healthy aging. At every age, prevention is better than cure. Several studies have found that prevention programs ― both clinical (for example, hearing technology) and nonclinical (for example, housing, social connections, and fitness) ― can improve the quality of life for older adults, and thus reduce the need for medical care.
건강한 노화의 홍보에 투자해라. 모든 연령대에서 예방은 치료보다 낫다. 여러 연구에 의하면 의료적(예를 들어, 청력 기술), 비의료적(예를 들어, 주거, 사회적 연결과 운동) 예방 프로그램은 모두 노인의 삶의 질을 향상시키고 건강 관리에 대한 필요를 감소시킨다.
Not all efforts have to do with using medicine: Mental, social and spiritual health are just as critical to the goal of healthy, happy, aging. For example, addressing inactivity and social isolation may help prevent cognitive decline.
모든 노력이 의학을 동반해야 하는 건 아니다. 정신적, 사회적, 영적인 건강 역시 건강하고 행복한 노화라는 목표에 대단히 중요하다. 예를 들어, 무기력함이나 사회적 고립에 대한 고심은 인지적 감소를 예방할 수도 있다.
Improve data and health measurements. Health is complicated, so no single data set can encompass everything. What can be done, though, is to define a standardized data catalog, and develop it in conjunction with other public bodies, healthcare, academia, and the private sector.
자료와 건강 측정치를 향상시켜라. 건강은 복잡하며 한 자료의 집합이 모든 것을 아우를 수 없다. 하지만 우리가 할 수 있는 일은 표준화된 자료 목록을 정의하고 이를 건강관리, 학계, 사적 부문과 함께 개발하는 것이다.
