China becomes 1st economy to grow since pandemic

중국, 펜데믹 이후 첫 번째로 경제 성장 이뤄

China became the first major economy to grow since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, recording an unexpectedly strong 3.2 percent expansion in the latest quarter after anti-virus lockdowns were lifted and factories and stores reopened.

중국은 바이러스 락다운이 해제되고 공장과 상점이 다시 문을 연 지난 분기에 예상치 못했던 3.2%의 강한 성장을 기록하며, 코로나바이러스 대유행 발생 이후 처음으로 플러스 성장한 주요 경제국이 되었다.

Growth reported Thursday for the three month's ending in June was a dramatic improvement over the previous quarter's 6.8 percent contraction ― China's worst performance since at least the mid-1960s.

목요일에 발표된 6월 말까지 3개월간의 경제 성장률은 1960년대 중반 이후 중국 최악의 실적인 직전 분기의 6.8% 감소와 비교하면 극적으로 개선된 모습이다.

But it still was the weakest positive figure since China started reporting quarterly growth in the early 1990s.

그러나 이는 중국이 1990년대 초 분기별 성장률을 발표하기 시작한 이래 여전히 가장 약한 플러스 성장세였다.

"We expect to see continuous improvement in the upcoming quarters," Marcella Chow of JP Morgan Asset Management said in a report.

JP모건자산운용의 마르셀라 차우는 보고서에서 "향후 분기에도 지속적인 개선이 있을 것으로 보인다"고 밝혔다.

China, where the coronavirus pandemic began in December, was the first economy to shut down and the first to start the drawn-out process of recovery in March after the ruling Communist Party declared the disease under control.

지난 12월 코로나바이러스 대유행이 시작된 중국은 공산당 정부가 통제하겠다고 선언한 이후 처음으로 경제활동을 중단했고 3월 들어 처음으로 장기화된 회복과정에 돌입했다.

"The national economy shifted from slowing down to rising in the first half of 2020," the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.

중국 국가통계국은 성명을 통해 "2020년 상반기 국가 경제가 둔화에서 상승으로 전환했다"고 밝혔다.

Economists say China is likely to recover faster than some other major economies due to the ruling Communist Party's decision to impose the most intensive anti-disease measures in history.

경제학자들은 중국이 역사상 가장 강도 높은 질병 예방 조치를 취하기로 한 집권 공산당의 결정으로 일부 다른 경제 주요국들보다 더 빨리 회복될 가능성이 크다고 보고 있다.
