Lee Boo-jin, CEO of Hotel Shilla |
The committee held a board meeting, Friday, and elected the 53-year-old as its new chairwoman. She will be spearheading the Visit Korea Year 2023-2024 campaign.
The committee said it elected Lee as she has demonstrated outstanding management skills as the CEO of Hotel Shilla, whose business is closely tied to Korean tourism industries. The committee described Lee as a perfect fit to lay the foundation for public-private cooperation as the government seeks to lure 30 million foreign tourists by 2027 through creative leadership.
Lee, a daughter of former Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, began her tourism career in 2001 when she headed the planning department of Hotel Shilla, a Samsung Group affiliate. After serving as a management strategy executive at Samsung Everland and an advisor for Samsung C&T, she was named the CEO of Hotel Shilla in 2010.
Lee has been named one of Forbes' "100 Most Powerful Women in the World" for eight straight years. She also made the list of Fortune's "The Most Powerful Women International" in 2016.
Lee did not attend the board meeting, but said in a press release that she will "meet Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Park Bo-gyoon, Korea Tourism Organization CEO Kim Jang-sil and other representatives of the Korean tourism industry as soon as possible to explore ideas on private-public cooperation to achieve success in Visit Korea Year campaigns."
As a nonprofit organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Visit Korea Committee operates as a public-private partnership and leads projects related to Visit Korea Year campaigns.
In December last year, the government declared 2023 and 2024 as the Visit Korea Year and set a goal of attracting 30 million tourists by 2027. For this goal, the government is preparing various events, travel packages, and promotional campaigns using Korean culture to boost visitors to the country.
