K-pop girl group New Jeans' management agency Ador refuted claims that the lyrics of the quintet's song, "Cookie," have sexual connotations. The company released a statement on Saturday, just a few days after some online users claimed the word "cookie" in the lyrics refers to female genitalia, slamming the agency for having underage girls sing an inappropriate song.
걸그룹 뉴진스 소속사 어도어는 이 5인조의 곡 '쿠키' 가사에 성적인 암시가 있다는 주장을 반박했다. 일부 온라인 이용자가 가사의 ‘쿠키'라는 단어가 여성의 생식기를 뜻한다고 주장하며 미성년자에게 부적절한 노래를 부르게 한 회사를 비난한지 며칠 만인 지난 8월 27일 소속사는 성명을 발표했다.
Some of the lyrics are: "Looking at my cookie. The scent is different (Taste it). One bite will not be enough."
가사 중 일부는 다음과 같다. "내 쿠키를 보고 있니/ 역시 향기부터 다르니(맛봐)/ 한입은 모자라니."
"Numerous doctors in English literature, interpreters and native speakers told us that ‘cookie' is not widely used sexual slang," Ador said in a statement. "So the term itself cannot be a problem, although its interpretations can differ depending on people's subjective experiences. However, slang is not part of standard language that everyone should know about."
어도어는 성명을 통해 "다수의 영문학 박사, 통·번역 전문가, 원어민이 '쿠키'는 통상 사용되는 성적인 속어가 아니라고 말했다"며 "따라서 (‘쿠키'라는) 단어 자체가 문제일 수는 없지만 받아들이는 사람의 주관적 경험에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 그러나 슬랭(속어)은 모두가 알아야 할 표준어가 아니"라고 밝혔다.

소속사에 따르면 '쿠키' 가사에서는 ‘쿠키 굽기'를 ‘CD 굽기'에 비유했다.
"The tune is an encapsulation of New Jeans' musical challenge," the company explained. "We tried to reveal the members' naturalness and freshness with its debut album, which offers four tracks: ‘Attention,' ‘Hype Boy,' ‘Hurt' and ‘Cookie.' We hope you banish all unnecessary doubts and see good intentions behind our content."
소속사는 "이 곡은 뉴진스의 음악적 도전을 함축한다"고 설명했다. "저희는 '어텐션', '하입 보이', '허트', '쿠키' 4곡이 수록된 데뷔 앨범을 통해 멤버들의 자연스러움과 풋풋함을 보여드리고자 노력했다. 불필요한 의심은 말끔히 걷어주시고 저희 콘텐츠의 ‘선의'를 봐주시면 좋겠다."
NewJeans is the first girl group launched by Ador, a label under Hybe that houses K-pop juggernaut BTS.
뉴진스는 K팝 거물 BTS가 소속된 하이브 산하 레이블인 어도어가 처음으로 선보인 걸그룹이다.
The five group members and their ages are: Minji (18), Hanni (18), Danielle (17), Haerin (16) and Hyein (14).
그룹 멤버의 이름과 나이는 민지(18), 하니(18), 다니엘(17), 해린(16), 혜인(14)이다.
The act was formed by Min Heejin, the CEO of Ador who previously worked as a creative director at SM Entertainment and contributed to the success of big-name acts like f(x) and EXO.
뉴진스는 SM엔터테인먼트에서 아트 디렉터로 활동하며 에프엑스, 엑소 등 유명 그룹의 성공에 기여한 민희진 어도어 대표이사가 기획한 그룹이다.
New Jeans, which burst onto the K-pop scene on Aug. 1, rose to instant stardom with its debut album, with one of its lead singles, "Attention," topping Melon — a major music streaming platform in Korea — for more than two weeks. Its music video has hit more than 18 million views on YouTube as of Sunday afternoon.
지난 8월 1일 가요계에 혜성처럼 등장한 뉴진스는 데뷔 앨범의 타이틀곡 '어텐션'으로 국내 주요 음원 스트리밍 플랫폼 멜론에서 2주 이상 1위를 차지하며 단숨에 스타덤에 올랐다. 뉴진스의 뮤직비디오는 유튜브 조회수 1800만 뷰(8월 28일 오후 기준)를 돌파했다.
