South Korea reported fewer than 20,000 COVID-19 cases for Wednesday as the spread of the Omicron variant appears to be now under control.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 18,816 new infections, including 34 from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 18,036,720.
The daily tally fell to a 17-week low for a Wednesday and declined around 33 percent from a week earlier, as the virus curve continues its downward trend begun in mid-March.
South Korea's daily caseload peaked at over 621,000, March 17, driven by the rapid spread of Omicron nationwide.
The KDCA added 34 deaths, taking the total to 24,063 for a fatality rate of at 0.13 percent; while the number of critically ill patients stood at 243. (Yonhap)
