The musical "MJ," which follows the life and music of legendary pop singer Michael Jackson (1958-2009) and was co-produced by CJ ENM, won four trophies at the 75th Tony Awards.
During the awards ceremony held at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Sunday (local time,) actor Myles Frost, who played Jackson, won the Best Actor award. Director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon clinched the Best Choreography award, while Natasha Katz nabbed the Best Lighting Design of a Musical award. Gareth Owen was the winner of the Best Sound Design of a Musical award.
"MJ" is written by Lynn Nottage, an American playwright who received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. In 2009, she won her first Pulitzer Prize for her play, "Ruin," and in 2017, she notched her second prize for another work, "Sweat."
Korean entertainment behemoth CJ ENM is a co-producer of "MJ," which premiered at Neil Simon Theatre, New York City, in December 2021.
"The news that 'MJ' was nominated in 10 categories at this year's Tony Awards was surprising enough, so I feel surreal to hear that it actually clinched so many awards," a CJ ENM official said. "I believe this achievement will have a positive influence on our upcoming performances."
Launched in 1947, the Tony Awards are known as the most prestigious prize that honors excellence in Broadway theaters.
To date, CJ ENM has co-produced numerous Broadway musicals, including "Moulin Rouge," "Kinky Boots," "The Bodyguard" and "Back to the Future." Since 2019, it has also been serving as a judge for the Tony Awards.
